Roman Statuette of a Bull in the Getty Villa, July 2008

Roman Statuette of a Bull in the Getty Villa, July 2008
Statuette of a Bull
Roman, from Pompeii, 100 BC- 79 AD
Silver and gold

This statuette of a majestic bull probably served as a dedication to the gods and would have been placed in a lararium. Household shrines were central to Roman domestic life; offerings were made daily to secure protection for the family. The bull may have been offered to Jupiter, who often took the form of this animal in mythological stories.
