Squirrel Forest

Squirrel Forest
The view from our upstairs balcony a bit over year ago. Squirrel Forest is my own name to the place where I can see my friends Osku and Riku. They happily climb up my legs to see if I have some peanuts for them. There are also some Crowned Doves, and lots of other birds.

Jenny McIntyre, Janet Brien have particularly liked this photo

This is delightful. A fine composition of two very pleasing shapes creating a lovely rounded edge pulling us diagonally through the image. So inviting! Your name makes me smile and fills me with excitement. Any place with such a moniker is surely full of some of my favorite friends! And so you say! This adds a sparkle to my eye to go with my grin and turns me into a child with clapping hands...back rush memories of my own, of squirrels running around my legs, barber-pole fashion, up to the waiting peanuts in my hands! You lucky man to have two fun furballs to say hello to when you step out to take a stroll there! :) Birds, too, of course..how nice...we have Mourning doves (and the rare collared) instead of Crowned and now I must know what species! I found a list of birds that make their home in Finland which include doves and pigeons...which frequent your beloved Squirrel Forest en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_birds_of_Finland#Pigeons_and_doves

Here is a trio I captured one day out on our deck...

After a further investigation I found it's called Common wood pigeon in English. Beautiful bird anyway, and nowadays more common in urban areas. It's old Finnish name was Toukomettinen.

Ohhh, and look what I found! A time lapse collage of a Common Wood Pigeon hatching! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_wood_pigeon#/media/File:WoodPigeonHatching.jpg

In regards to naming any animal "Common", I think it's pretty rude because the natural assumption is that it's nothing special. Nothing could be further from the truth! :)

Jenny, that "common" belief of the berries and the forthcoming winter is just a common belief. The trees don't know how it will be after few months. They just follow their perennial periodicity. If it happens to be a rest period to berry carrying trees and a harsh winter at the same time, the animals starve.
