The Rose garden occupies the space that used to be called Lump Fort (built in the 17th centur as part of Portsmouth's sea defences). Only the walls and a few rooms remain.

Thanks Wilhelm...............the walls and a couple of rooms are all that remain of a fort which was originally built in the 17th Century. So they've been there quite a while..............
