The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Saint Peter in York, commonly known as York Minster, is the cathedral of York, England, and is one of the largest of its kind in Northern Europe. The minster is the seat of the Archbishop of York, the second-highest office of the Church of England, and is the cathedral for the Diocese of York. It is run by a dean and chapter, under the Dean of York. The title "minster" is attributed to churches established in the Anglo-Saxon period as missionary teaching churches, and serves now as an honorific title. Services in the minster are sometimes regarded as on the High Church or Anglo-Catholic end of the Anglican continuum.
The minster has a very wide Decorated Gothic nave and chapter house, a Perpendicular Gothic Quire and east end and Early English North and South transepts. The nave contains the West Window, constructed in 1338, and over the Lady Chapel in the east end is the Great East Window, (finished in 1408), the largest expanse of medieval stained glass in the world. In the north transept is the Five Sisters Window, each lancet being over 52 feet (16 m) high. The south transept contains a rose window, while the West Window contains a heart-shaped design colloquially known as 'The Heart of Yorkshire'.

DALE CHIHULY, Artist
Born in 1941 in Tacoma, Washington, Dale Chihuly was introduced to glass while studying interior design at the University of Washington. After graduating in 1965, Chihuly enrolled in the first glass programme in the country, at the University of Wisconsin. He continued his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), where he later established the glass program and taught for more than a decade.
In 1968, after receiving a Fulbright Fellowship, he went to work at the Venini glass factory in Venice. There he observed the team approach to blowing glass, which is critical to the way he works today. In 1971, Chihuly cofounded Pilchuck Glass School in Washington State. With this international glass center, Chihuly has led the avant-garde in the development of glass as a fine art.
His work is included in more than 200 hundred museum collections worldwide. He has been the recipient of many awards, including twelve honorary doctorates and two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The photo shown was taken at the Seattle exhibition which opened in 2012, and is ongoing.

The site became a fortified castle during the 12th century when Henry I gave Alexander, Bishop of Lincoln, permission to build ramparts and turn his fish pond into a moat.
In 1139 King Stephen imprisoned the bishop and appropriated this and other properties belonging to him. In 1173 the castle was returned to the City of Lincoln. Bishop Geoffrey Plantagenet built the first stone fortification on the site. The castle was rectangular with large square towers at each corner.
All that remains of this fortification are the main gate, the west tower and a few other areas of masonry showing oolite stone. In 1216 King John died at the castle and thereafter it was seized by a group of barons. In 1218 Henry III besieged the castle and after bombarding it for eight days the barons surrendered.
Restored and rebuilt in red sandstone by the end of the 13th century it had become a magnificent, fortified mansion. In Tudor times Henry VIII took the castle from Bishop Henry Holbeach and after that it remained in royal hands.
During the Civil War the town of Newark was a Royalist stronghold and besieged four times by the Parliamentarians. King Charles I took refuge at the castle before retreating to Oxford. After the king was captured by the Scots the town surrendered and the garrison was allowed to march out with all their possessions.
The castle was subsequently dismantled and by 1649 was described as a ruin.

Sir Walter Scott Monument....Princes st. Edinburgh
Took this from my hotel window, it was directly opposite, fantastic view to open the curtains to in the morning!!! It is made of black stone, like several buildings in Edinburgh, the lighter bits you see are where they have done repairs with a different colour stone.

Oh Funny Owl
Oh, funny night owl; I relate
to you. I also stay up late!
My eyes, like yours, are mellow green
and staring too, but at a screen.
I stare at E-mails and TV
until I know that finally
I must retire myself to bed
and rest my weary night owl head.
I feel so rotten when I wake
I have to do a double take.
I see the clock. It's eight a.m.
I sit up grumbling, "Damn, oh, Damn."
Then brimming with new morning cheer,
I drag myself before the mirror.
And what I see upon my face
are little lines I can't erase.
Oh, funny night owl. We're not wise
with circles underneath our eyes!
And now I get to look like hell
because I love the night so well.
