Young men, planted like seeds …

Young men, planted like seeds …
…that will never grow. Mostly young American men, in their teens or early twenties. Sons and husbands; butchers, bakers, candlestick makers; students, lawyers, teachers, mechanics, farmers, musicians, artists; also two sons of President Theodore Roosevelt (Theodore Roosevelt Jr and Quentin Roosevelt) are among the 9,388 people buried here.

I remember hitchhiking along the Côte d'Opale 50 years ago, and seeing a Commonwealth War Cemetery every couple of miles, or so it seemed. Someone of my age was raised on a diet of documentaries and dramas about the war, but I think the actual devastation never struck me till then.

Maybe that made me more aware; I'm struck to this day by how every tiny Canadian town has a memorial to its war dead.
