Platanthera chapmanii (Chapman's Fringed orchid)

Platanthera chapmanii (Chapman's Fringed orchid)
On August 7, 2014, Matt Richards and I met in southeast Georgia to monitor and study the rare, Platanthera chapmanii or Chapman's Fringed orchid. There are only a handful of populations of this orchid in Georgia, and Matt, who is the Conservation Coordinator at the Atlanta Botanical Garden in Atlanta, has been studying this species and attempting to find new sites for it in Georgia.

Thanks for the comments, Jim. It'll be interesting to see what the results of the Spiranthes study are. S. diluvialis certainly is different from the other two species we have here in Washington, but I've not see that many of the species, so I wouldn't even be able to guess at its validity as a species.

On another note, while I'm no expert on DNA analysis, my observations from watching the results of DNA analysis of various tropical orchids lad me to think that DNA analysis is as much a matter of interpretation as any other method of determining species.
