Caithness - Beautiful Wasteland

10 Aug 2013 3 3 284
Now we turn East across the top of Scotland and start to make our way back towards Cornwall. There is a severe visual shock when, after a few miles from the Kyle of Tongue, the ever changing wild mountain scenery of the Northwest Highlands turns to the endless, flat wastelands of the cat people (Caithness). These are the lands of the Clearances and for me, despite the undoubted beauty, they hold an atmosphere of desolation and loneliness.

A lovely spot, just to the east of the Kyle of Tongue on the Sutherland coast. It is protected by two islands, Eilean Nan Ron and Neave or Combe Island.

Unidentified Flower

So far we have not identified this one. At first glance it appears like Bog Asphodel or St Johns Wort but on closer examination it doesn't seem to either. We found just two of them, about 20ft apart, just above the cliffs on an east facing grass slope. Can any of you wild flower buffs make an identification?

Magicians Garden

When our son was small we used to drive past a sparcely poulated garden, with just a few trees. The owner was invariably seen walking around in a dark flowing cape so it became known as the magicians garden. This rockpool had a similar feel to it.

My first attempts with an ND10 filter and I still have to master the technique.

Sundown Over Sandwood Lagoon

05 Aug 2013 4 4 429
The day brought all kinds of weather from sunshine through bands of light rain and drizzle. The sky was constantly and quickly changing, one minute it was overcast the next dramatic clouds or clear blue. It was hard to keep up with the ever changing light.

I Know Those Rabbits Are Out There

05 Aug 2013 5 3 658
Monty met wild rabbits for the first time at Sandwood Loch, we don't have any in our are of Cornwall. We pitched our tent in the middle of the warren of all warrens, there was nowhere else, and Montrose thought all his birthdays had come at once. He hardly stopped for breath but he didn't manage to catch one. Although he reckons that next time.........
