Panel text: The gardens of Villandry require 85,000 vegetable plants and 125,0000 bedding plants, 50% of which are grown in the castle greenhouse; The planting plan of the kitchen garden changes on a three yearly rotation schema; This is a complex operation as many things may be taken in account: colour schemes and crop rotation and all of this twice yearly; Ten gardeners work all year in these gardens; The origin of the Kitchen garden dates back to the middle ages; In their abbeys monks liked to plant their vegetables in geometric patterns; The Italian influence brought decorative elements to the kitchen garden as fountains, tunnels and flowerbeds; A French gardener, Jacques Androuet du Cerveau, was the first to combine these two fashions to create kitchen gardens which served as an embellishment for the chateaux of the Loire Valley; They are all gone today, execpt Villandry, which remains the last example of the style in which our ancestors harmonised flowers and vegetables together in the 16 th century; France Centre Region Indre-et-Loire Department Touraine Province Villandry Loire Chateau.
