For every one such wonderful and beautiful building that still survives there must once have been 99 like it that fell victim, tragically, to rot and decay, Victorian and 20th Century developers and the Luftwaffe.

No Luftwaffe in Oxford, but a plethora of demolishers and developers.

I can see that the Mitre is a tudor (timber-framed) building with a later Georgian frontage added. They were common in towns and cities, but less so in London because most of its tudor buildings were destroyed in the Great Fire of 1666 and the redevelopment which followed.
