Come September, the classrooms would be half empty, with loads of kids 'gone opping'.

"On the Sunday morning in early September 1939, when world war two was declared, the hop picking season was just about to begin. My mum was strolling along the Pearson's Green Road, (near Brenchley in Kent,) on her way to the village shop to buy my grandmother her 'News of the World.' All of a sudden a well meaning but daft, old woman, ran out of her cottage and screamed at my mum, 'It's started! Hitler's coming!' My mum panicked and ran back to the huts. It took my grandmother a good while to convince my mum that the hop fields of Kent were not at the top of Adolf Hitler's list of priorities."

"Great story Chalky, that brings back another memory, we had an empty hut next door to us and in it was a tin bath in which my sister, probably 15yrs then, was having a bath on Sunday morning when the Air Raid warnings went off. They were probably testing them out, my poor sister got the fright of her life and came running out of the hut stark naked. People were running to the woods to hide from some planes overhead until a bloke shouted that the planes were ours... Happy days Mate.. That was at Faversham Kent as I remember .... "
