In 1890 an assembly hall with stage and gallery was built against the East Oxford Constitutional Club, no.106 Cowley Road. It was let for theatricals and music-hall performances.
In 1902 the lessee named it the Empire theatre, and staged farce, variety, and melodrama.
In 1908 the name was changed to the East Oxford theatre under new management, and a slightly higher standard of theatrical show was performed.
In 1912 the theatre was closed and reopened as a cinema, the Palace Theatre.
