Yashica-44a TLR

Yashica-44a TLR
I'm so excited because I just won an auction on eBay for a really good Yashica-44a twin lens reflex. What's good about this particular camera, is that it takes 127 film. So, the resulting negatives should be pretty good. I've read that these particular cameras take really sharp pictures. The image above is from the camera manual.

I was talking to my sister the other day and telling her I wished that I had a better 127 camera than the ones I have. Basically, they're all cheap plastic or bakelite cameras with cheap plastic lenses. A 127 negative is pretty good sized, so if a person had a good camera, the negatives should turn out sharp as a tack. I went browsing through some of my links for places that sell 127 film and on one of them, they pictured a TLR camera very much like this one. That got me to looking for one and I found this Yashica.

Here's what my actual camera looks like - the seller posed it on it's side, so I have turned it upright:

Cool! My Yashica 44LM is my favorite one to shoot! I also bought a Yashica Mat 124 so I could shoot 120 film.

I've really been wanting a good 120 camera to shoot with as well. After I try this one, maybe I'll like it enough to look at a Yashica Mat as well.

120 cameras are far more plentiful with a lot of variety out there. I've got several different brands of the 120 TLR cameras and a few other types. Sadly ... I just haven't had the time to do much with them here lately. I've got part of a roll I shot with my Graflex Crown Graphic I need to finish. I bought a 120 back for it too and I can shoot 120 roll film as well as the 4x5 sheet film.

I have heard that about the availability of 120 cameras, I just wanted to expand my 127 capabilities just a little. One of the prized possessions of my camera collection is my Grandmother Wright's old Kodak Holiday 127. So, it all grew out of that. But, like you said, one day, I'll get around to locating some better 120 cameras than the ones I have and expand that field a little more for my collection.

I remember when you talked about your Graflex Crown Graphic camera. So, it uses roll film? I wasn't aware of that. I thought it used 4x5 negatives which you changed backs for each exposure. What size of roll film did it use?

The 120 back takes 120, or 220 film. I also have a 35mm film back for the Graflex Crown Graphic camera and it uses bulk roll 35mm film. Those backs just replace the single 4x5 film backs. I can shoot all three in the same session by just changing backs.

That's pretty flexible!

Most of the professional grade medium format, and large format cameras will do that. I also have a Polaroid back for it, but there's not any film available for that one.
