Nostalgic a bit more than for many. The earlier years of my work in telecoms was contributing to replacing manual phones with dial phones. Thanks Jaap.

These were the last version of the central battery manual phone. My childhood home in the 50s & 60s had the dial version of this shape. Thanks David.

Hartelijke groeten, Frans.

Thanks Frans. It was made by a then major Australian company, AWA LTD (Amalgamated Wireless Australasia). The insides suggest it was made around 1960. The curly cord on the handset shows much wear and is likely to be original. The diagram is the circuit of the phone and the instructions of how to change jumper wires in it to suit single phone or parallel phones use. This type of phone and its related manual exchange was in use in some towns in Australia until the 1980s.

My camera is not working correctly these days so these photos were taken on my phone. One day when I get it fixed or buy a new camera I will take photos of this and some other old phones.

Vriendelijke groeten en hopelijk heb jij snel je fotocamera weer up to date.

This phone works by a pair of wires which connect it to the telephone exchange. See the cord in the photo which is not curly. This is connected to wires from the telephone exchange.

When a person makes a call they lift the handset. Then they speak to an operator at the telephone exchange who connects them to the number they want to speak to.

This type of manual system is powered by the telephone exchange so it is called a Central Battery exchange.
