I like Garratts, it is nice to see images of one in working condition and especially one that's been working hard that day.

Thanks, this is probably from 1971. Broadmeadow was the depot used at that time by steam and some diesel locos used in general main line working in the Newcastle region South to Gosford and North to Muswellbrook. More garrats of this type to come when I scan slides from that era.

Correct! They had a mechanical stoker. From memory there were 4 taps which controlled steam jets for directing the coal to the fire.
