Lewis Lukes House

Lewis Lukes House
It's getting harder to find old photos that fit with the season, so I thought I'd add some photos of supposedly unique Toronto building styles. One of the reasons I say these styles are supposedly unique is that outside Toronto this house would be considered a variety of Queen Anne Revival, the variation being the Romanesque ground floor. In Toronto, though, they're called Annex houses because the style started in a neighbourhood called the Annex. And this is the first one. It was built in 1887 and designed by E. J. Lennox, the leading Toronto architect of the day. He is best known for Old City Hall and Casa Loma.

Will S., Ecobird, Nouchetdu38, Sarah P. and 11 other people have particularly liked this photo

I do, too, Joe. Queen Anne Revival was very popular in North America, and I suspect Lennox may hsve been influenced by Richardsonian Romanesque here as well.

a well-kept old house! A friend on the other site posts pictures of older, well built, northern Illinois farmhouses that ate about to fall down, and I keep expecting to see the one my parents lived in (and I had a room in) when they were farming and my mother worked in a defense plant. As I've become antique, I tend to want to see old houses still in use, and well kept.

This is no longer a residence, Bob, but it's now an office building. It's designated as a heritage property, so that will scare off homebuyers. It's tremendously chic, on the other hand, to casually mention that your office is at 37 Madison.

Lennox is a much under-rated architect, too, Sarah,

A beautiful building John. Annexe houses seems quite a mundane name for what are attractive and well designed buildings like this. I love the detail

It's quite an interesting neighbourhood, Carol. The eastern part, which is where this house is, used to be home to many of the richest and most powerful families in Toronto. Then they all moved north to Forest Hill when it was opened up, and the Annex became a neighbourhood of rooming houses for poor people and students (it's near the University of Toronto). Then, the story goes, professors from the university noticed that these attractive houses could be bought cheap, and the neighbourhood gentrified.
