Looking for someone
Je veux évoquer ici (sans exhibitionnisme) Marilyne, ma belle-fille ici entourée de sa mère et de son oncle, qui a rompu tout lien avec sa mère et moi il y a 5 ans, ainsi qu'avec sa famille, puis avec l'ensemble de ses ami(e)s. Sans autre explication qu'un reniement de tout ce qui la rattachait à son enfance, certes pas toujours gaie mais parsemée, comme pour chacun, d'instants qu'elle a chéris avec nous, et entourée d'un amour exigeant qui l'a sortie de ses ornières et l'a portée vers une prometteuse carrière juridique qu'elle exerce, nous l'avons découvert récemment, au Canada.
Infinies supputations concernant sa motivation ou son embrigadement au sein d'on ne sait quelle secte ou mouvement, inexplicable à ce qu'on connaît de sa personnalité affirmée et attachante, vive et, il est vrai, intransigeante.
Autre qu'une mort ou une disparition que tant vivent, d'autant plus depuis la pandémie, un tel reniement laisse pantois et impuissant..., perplexe, tellement amer et tristement affligé...
I want to evoke here (without exhibitionism) Marilyne, my daughter-in-law here surrounded by her mother and uncle, who broke all links with her mother and me 5 years ago, as well as with her family, then with all her friends. Without any other explanation than a denial of everything that linked her to her childhood, certainly not always happy but strewn, as for each of us, with moments that she cherished with us, and surrounded by a demanding love that took her out of her ruts and carried her towards a promising legal career that she is practicing, we discovered recently, in Canada.
Endless speculation about her motivation or her involvement in some cult or movement, which is inexplicable from what we know of her assertive and endearing, lively and, it is true, uncompromising personality.
Other than a death or disappearance which so many are experiencing, all the more so since the pandemic, such a disavowal leaves one perplexed and powerless... Perplexed, so bitter and sadly distressing...

Then I read your words, full of deep sorrow for Maryline's voluntary departure and her denial of a lifetime of affection, without any explanation, without any confrontation, however stormy it might have been.
I was stunned, shocked just imagining the sense of rupture, inexplicable and unexplained, the sense of regret and the search for meaning in all this.
At least, even if from very far away you follow her, you have news.
Of course I don't pretend that this is enough, or that it is any consolation.
But at least you know that she lives, that she has a life of her own.
But Pam, who ,as a young woman seems to have had a similar experience, so wisely says in her extraodinary words which I wholly share:
