Marros Sands panorama

Marros Sands to Amroth Just east of Amroth, we cross the county boundary into Carmarthenshire. The fine beach of Marros Sands, some 4 km east of Amroth is relatively isolated between Telpyn Point and Ragwen Point. There is no road access; the only way to get here is along the coastal paths, along the beach at lowest tide, or by boat. This is an easterly panoramic view from the delightful coast path. On the distant skyline, the higher ground east of the Gwendraeth valley is in the centre; the Gower peninsula to the right of centre. Panorama constructed from two landscape photos stitched together using Photoshop software. Best viewed LARGE on black background!

Pendine Sands from Gilman Point

A closer view of Pendine Sands viewed from Gilman Point. The flat area in the centre of the photo is Pendine Burrows, comprised of blown sand and former saltmarsh, while the former degraded sea cliff line (Ipswichian age?) can be seen extending away into the left distance. I liked the perspective offered by the sands, sea and clouds on this fine September day.

Pendine Sands from Dolwen Point

The 7 km straight stretch of Pendine Sands was famous in the 1920s for attempts on the world land speed record. Malcolm Campbell achieved a record speed of 174.22 mph in February 1927 in his car Bluebird . I liked the perspective offered by the sands, sea and clouds on this fine September day.

Chambered Cairn at Morfa Bychan, Ragwen Point, Carmarthenshire

There are 4, possibly 5, Neolithic age, chambered cairns at this location. Across Carmarthen Bay in the distance are (L-R) Pendine Sands, Cefn Sidan and Pembrey Burrows, with Mynydd Penbre beyond; the Loughor estuary, finally Llanmadoc Hill and Rhosili Down on the Gower peninsula.

Pont Spwdwr, near Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire

Originally uploaded for the Guesswhere UK Group. This is Pont Spwdwr, 'Spudder's Bridge', possibly even the bridge of 'Rees Powdwr' in early accounts. It crosses the river Gwendraeth Fawr between Kidwelly and Trimsaran in Carmarthenshire. The old bridge shown in the foreground dates back to the at least the 15th century; I'm not sure if the exact date of construction is known. The new bridge behind carries the B4308 road and dates from the 20th century. Taken with a Zenit 'E'; scanned from a Kodachrome 64 transparency.

It was a wet day at Llansteffan Castle, Carmarthenshire

This is Llansteffan Castle, looking WSW towards Laugharne Sands. It was cold, wet, windy, horizontal rain - you know the sort of thing... Taken with a Zenit 'E'; scanned from a Kodachrome 64 transparency.
