Hyder, Alaska 500a1

01 Jun 1994 252
Just west of Stewart is the very small town of Hyder, Alaska. The only way to get to Hyder is from Stewart -- in 1994, there was no border patrol service between the two. The fjord, Hyder, and Stewart were quite interesting and I ended up spending two nights there. On my first night I had stopped at a tavern in Hyder, and ended up talking late into the night with the bartender -- a woman from the states who had moved up there several years earlier and was, during the day, working an old gold claim up in the mountains (on her own). From 1994 San Francisco - Arctic Ocean camping trip. Scan of an older picture. Best viewed as part of the NW Canada set.

Fraser River Hells Gate 475a1

01 Jun 1994 221
Fraser River Canyon. The rest of this narrative (below) is about the trip and not specific to this picture. Since the basic aim of the trip was to escape, my plan was to try to avoid the busiest highways and to camp every night. From San Francisco I took I-5 to Corning (first night's camping) and then on to Weed. From Weed I took US 97 through Klamath Falls, Ore, to Toppenish, Wash. From there, a short stretch on I-82 to Ellensberg, Wash., then US 97 and US 2 to Index, Wash. (second night camping). After Index, I headed back towards the coast and I-5, to Vancouver, BC. Even though Vancouver was more urban than I wanted to deal with, I went there to meet a contact who was going to give me directions for finding what sorts of gay communities existed in rural, northern, Canada. Unfortunately, he turned out to have no valuable information. From Vancouver I took the Trans-Canada highway to Hope, and then turned north on the Fraser Canyon Highway -- finally I felt like I was really starting my journey. From there on it was going to be two-lane highways at best, frequently narrower gravel and dirt roads. Unfortunately, the Fraser Canyon Highway turned out to have lots of truck traffic -- forestry and farming are big industries in that part of Canada. But, there were some interesting spots along the way (adjacent photos): From 1994 San Francisco - Arctic Ocean camping trip. Scan of an older picture. Best viewed as part of the NW Canada set.

St George, UT LDS Temple 540a

01 Jun 2003 190
St. George is the largest town in this part of Utah. One of the more remarkable aspects of St. George was the LDS temple -- an impressive piece of architecture that dominates the skyline.

Snow Canyon State Park

Snow Canyon State Park, at dusk in the summer. The park is just northwest of St. George. I wish that I had known more about this park when I visited the area, it has wonderful trails and views.

Eureka, UT (633)

10 Feb 2013 177
'Downtown' Eureka at about 3PM on a weekday afternoon. When I was there in 2003 there had been some effort to convert the buildings into places that may be of historical or tourist interest, but that didn't seem to be going very well.

Eureka, UT Original Levi's ad (632)

01 Jun 2003 165
It turns out 'jeans' were called 'waist overalls' until well after WWII. There's an interesting history on the Levi's website that explains much of what is in this old sign.

Vernon, UT 642-2a

Looking west at Sunrise from the campground at Vernon reservoir. The campground is not listed on any camp guides that I could find, but locals had told me about it. It is quite scenic, but has very primitive facilities. <

Pony Express Trail, Fish Springs NWR 655a

01 Jun 2003 145
Roughly halfway into the Pony Express Trail, one comes to an area of swamps and lakes surrounded by very dry desert and mountains, the Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge. Just visiting it is worth the drive -- the contrast of desert mountains and swamp, and the variety of birds, were a moving reminder of the need to preserve the fragile ecosystem that we call home.

Along US 93a, south of Wendover. This photo is actually in Nevada, but since it is integral to a Utah trip, I'm leaving it in that set.

Mogollon, NM (3332)

22 Jun 2007 1 188
Former mining town of Mogollon, NM. As in many other parts of New Mexico, there are some artists and other people living in the old town. The first time I was there there was only a small bakery (very good) and one general store open. The second time I was there, no businesses were open. I may not have seen any artist studios because both visits were mid-week. Best viewed as part of New Mexico set.
