Rotterdam Binnenweg bakery Santa… (#0112)

Rotterdam Binnenweg bakery Santa… (#0112)
I was really trying to get a picture of the bakery (gebakkraam)….

If you believe that, then you’ll believe that this very large sculpture is just of an ordinary Santa.

‘Santa Claus’ is, actually, the name of the sculpture. Created by an American artist it was originally banned from public display and shown only at an art museum. The Binnenweg Association of businesses which represents the long commercial street that starts at this point, petitioned to have the sculpture placed at the west end of the shopping street – and succeeded.

The artist is described as being quite critical of consumerist culture, thus the choosing of depicting Santa Claus similar to a common garden gnome of Santa, and the choice for a depiction of the Christmas tree.
