Slab City Salvation Mountain (#0165)
One of the more famous landmarks of 'Slab City' is 'Salvation Mountain', which is the work of one man and 100’s (probably thousands) of gallons of paint.
I’ve been to Slab City many times but since I won’t support activities that proselytize religion, I had never visited the site. The creator of the mountain died in 2014 and a non-profit was established whose mission is to preserve the site. Since I was visiting Slab City with a friend who had never been there, and since the non-profit that maintains the site does have a goal of preserving folk art, I felt comfortable visiting it for the first time.
Note on the right side of the picture the yellow steps (the “Yellowbrick Road”) going up the mountain. Immediately in front of me is a long-abandoned boat, I’ve no idea its symbolic intent.
