My personal memories of my 15 months in Germany in the late 60's (not Berlin, I couldn't go there) are of a gray and relatively colorless environment, which clearly wasn't the case. I suspect these memories are heavily shaded by the Cold War mood of the hulk of Soviet oppression that was so close. Thus scenes such as this, of clearly visible reminders of the oppression surrounded by the colors and activities of life, I found difficult to reconcile with the grayness of my own memories.
