Berlin Kreuzberg Viktoriapark (#2172)

Berlin Kreuzberg Viktoriapark (#2172)
The Victory Column in the Tiergarten, from the liberation monument in Vikoriapark.

This image, taken from one very prominent war monument and looking at another very prominent war monument, fits with a sense that developed throughout the trip of the past being much more integrated into contemporary German culture than seems to be the case in the U.S. Maybe the difference is due to my living in Southern California, but it does seem that U.S. culture has much less of a sense of the culture as being part of a continuum over time, instead being something that is constantly remade in the present.

You hint at an aspect of the difference between the cultures of the American East and West Coasts that fascinates me, though it's only been in the last five or six years as I've explored the West that I've even understood that it exists. (I suspect both ends of the nation are oblivious to the differences between themselves and the people on the other end, and when they finally experience it they're dismayed.) But the Euro-American cultures in my part of the country are at least a century older than those in your part, and I think that extra century (or more, in the Northeast) affects the way we look at history in many subtle ways. I see this, and I think of a hill where I stood once in Boston.

It might be partly because I'm from Florida which, despite being discovered by Europeans relatively early, shares a trait with California of ignoring much of its past and constantly rebuilding swamp lands. I was similarly surprised in the northern prairie areas where the Indian wars are still part of memory.
