Lancaster, CA solar (0396)
Sierra Sun Tower in Lancaster was the first place that I saw a concentrated solar plant (CSP), one where mirrors reflect to a central point and the electricity is generated there (rather than in solar panels). The facility opened in 2009 and my older pictures show it operating. Other times that I passed it wasn't operating and I could not find why it isn't currently operating.

I found this from an energy blogger posted in 2011, so it carries all the weight an energy blogger could bring to the topic three years ago. Who knows just how accurate the information is, but it suggests some interesting things ...

Also, this thing has an advertised capacity of 2.5 MW even when it is running. 2.5 MW is tiny. An average wind turbine will generate between two and three times as much electricity.

Thanks, that is as helpful as anything I've seen. The space covered by the plant, and the complete space available, is small, which would fit with it being either a peaker or a proving grounds. From what I have been seeing, the evidence is mounting against CSP due to harm to birds and apparently higher upkeep. I also heard the other day that solar plants planned in California are having trouble finding utilities willing to buy their power -- we've got to figure out some way to store the energy produced.

So, I guess we all just keep burning fossil fuels or using nuclear and destroy the world that way!
