Heidelberg castle, in 1969 (065)
My first, tentative, travels on my own in Germany were down to Heidelberg. It was a relatively short train ride, and was my first exposure to the massive castles in Germany.

Pictures in this set (Military years) are from when I was in the military, from 1967-1970. All photos were originally slides, a friend spent very many hours restoring those slides to being viewable.

We could have met there :-)))
As conscientious objector I had to work in a big psychiatric hospital close to Heidelberg (Nov 69 to Apr.70).
An interesting thing to do, in the free time I had, was to visit Heidelberg. :)

btw :-)

About the same time. I was raised in the U.S. south and was against the Vietnam war, but came from a background where opposing the war wasn't something I considered. Later when stationed in Turkey (after Darmstadt), I considered filing for c.o. status, but doing that would have kept me in the military longer than just finishing my term. The military, as happens for many young folk, actually was the source for my gaining a better understanding of capitalism/imperialism and helped me break out of a conservative upbringing.

Your comment lead me to think of a very impressive "event". In a demo in the streets against the war in Vietnam, close to the "America House", people from Heidelbeg threw flowerpots and waste from their windows down on the demonstrating people. It was dangerous to be there in the heated social situation.
In this time I heard Simon and Garfunkel (Homeward Bound) and Leonhard Cohen (Suzanne) songs in a bar of the cinema, for the first time.
