Majorca 1970 and 2000

November 1970 - Tranvías Eléctricos Interurbanos de Palma operated the bus service from Palma to Palma Nova.The company had been a tramway operator in and around the capital until the late 1950s. Bus number 84 was standing at the Palma Nova terminus before returning to the capital. We rode on this bus which had a hole in the floor (about the shape and size of a large egg) which allowed fumes to enter the bus. I read that the company had gone bankrupt around 1972 after which a new business emerged as SALMA (Societat Anònima Laboral Mallorquina d'Autobusos) which was the forerunner of today’s EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transports Urbans de Palma de Mallorca S.A.)

November 1970 - Tranvías Eléctricos Interurbanos de Palma bus number 98 was standing at the Palma Nova terminus before returning to the capital. Tourist development was proceeding apace and when I made a return visit 30 years later it was totally impossible to recognise this location or to see what had been a more noticeable boundary between the neighbouring resorts of Palma Nova and Magaluf. At the time of my earlier visit it appeared that the buses of Catalina Marques that ran from Palma to Magaluf and beyond were limited stop until reaching the first stop beyond the Palma Nova terminus of the TEIP service.

Wednesday 25 October 2000 – EMT (Empresa Municipal de Transports Urbans de Palma de Mallorca) is the city transport authority in the Majorcan capital. MAN powered Pegaso bus 861 (PM 6233 BF) seen at Palma Nova on service 21 from Palma. EMT no longer operates this route which appears to have been absorbed into the network of TiB (Transports de les Illes Balears), the authority responsible for the coordination of inter-urban bus services outside the capital.

November 1970 - Ferrocarriles de Mallorca PM 145583 seen in Palma on the service to El Arenal.

November 1970 – A striking coach taken in low evening sunlight which I know nothing about. It was working for Global Holidays and had gone when I looked the next morning. Seen at Palma Nova.

Monday 30 October 2000 – This former London Transport RT, seen in Santa Ponҫa, was a promotional vehicle for Solbank - a bank owned by Lloyds Bank International at one time. Pink bus and pink ladies.

November 1970 (Majorca) – I just clicked this photograph without taking any details. I can’t even recall where it was – possibly the Caves of Drach.

Wednesday 25 October 2000 – When I visited Majorca in 1970 I travelled on a coach operated by Alberti Pujol. I presumed this striking Ayats Atlas bodied Iveco was with the same company. 39 (IB 5011 DM) was seen in Peguera.
