Travel disruption in Fendon Road, Cambridge - 27 S…

Friday 27 September 2019 – Stagecoach bus services 1 and 2 traversing the roundabout at Queen Edith’s Way and Fendon Road in Cambridge are facing diversion (Sept 2019 to April 2020) as a result of modifications as part of the creation of the UK’s first ‘Dutch style’ roundabout. Explanation of this may be seen via this link www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roads-and-parking/transport-projects/cycling-&-pedestrian-improvements/fendon-road-and-queen-edith-s-way-roundabout This bus stop in Fendon Road is normally used by Cherry Hinton bound service 1 buses and city centre/Chesterton etc bound service 2 buses. Neither are using this section of road during the construction works. (Service 1 still operates past here heading towards Addenbrooke’s Hospital but uses a different route when operating towards Cherry Hinton), Service 2 isn’t running through to Addenbrooke’s but is terminating at Wulfstan Way (Queen Edith Chapel). The timetable advises passengers to change to a service 1 bus at Cherry Hinton Road/Derwent Close to complete such a journey. Service 1 also operates every ten minutes. Service 114 operated by A2B Bus and Coach (Mondays to Fridays) and Big Green Bus Company (Saturdays) remain unchanged and are operating normally through to/from Addenbrookes in both directions although there are only four trips each way and no Sunday service. Alternative temporary bus stops are sited a short distance behind the camera.

It would normally have emerged from the turning on the right but that road being closed off means buses approach the roundabout along Mowbray Road directly beyond. Buses towards Cherry Hinton take a different diversion.

Buses from Cherry Hinton take a different slightly longer diversion. Stagecoach East (Cambus) 19614 (AE10 BYD), an Alexander Dennis Enviro400 bodied Trident new in April 2010, was seen in Nightingale Avenue operating to Cherry Hinton on service 1. Monday 22 April 2024 (1212) – Two Stagecoach East MCV bodied Volvo BZL electric double deckers seen at the UK’s first ‘Dutch style roundabout’ in Cambridge. The roundabout stands at the intersection of Queen Edith’s Way, Fendon Road and Mowbray Road. Construction began in September 2019 and the roundabout opened in July 2020. Explanation of the operation may be seen via this link: www.cambridgeshire.gov.uk/residents/travel-roads-and-parking/transport-projects/cycling-pedestrian-improvements/fendon-road-and-queen-edith-s-way-roundabout and a report when it opened in July 2020 www.camcycle.org.uk/blog/2020/07/cambridge-celebrates-arrival-of-uks-first-dutch-style-roundabout Now, I ride a bicycle but I despair at the attitudes of and lack of sense by some cyclists. It was fairly quiet when I took this set of photographs but even though there was all this safety stuff in place with dedicated cycle lanes I had to have eyes in my bum cheeks when stood on the footpath as cyclists used the pedestrian (zebra) crossings and general footpaths rather than the cycle lanes. The two buses were operating cross city service 2. On the right 86024 (BV23 NTF), was working the 1210 service from Addenbrooke’s Hospital to Milton. The bus on the left was 86030 (BV23 NTN) working the 1101 from Milton to Addenbrooke’s Hospital.
