Friday 12 August 1994 – R W Appleby Limited had an active base at the Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough operating normal town services and open top services for holidaymakers. WJY 760 was a Metro-Cammell bodied Leyland Atlantean PDR1/1 that had been new as a standard covered top bus to Plymouth City Transport in October 1962. Their original fleet number was 160 but it became 460 when the bus was converted to open top. It still wore the ‘Golden Hind’ livery and fleet number 460 from its days at Plymouth. Seen here near the Spa Bridge in Scarborough prior to leaving on a circular tour along the seafront and through the town. My young niece and late father are on the top deck waiting for me to board.

Thursday 11 August 1994 - R W Appleby Limited had an active base at the Yorkshire coastal town of Scarborough operating both coaches and buses, the latter on normal town services and open top services for holidaymakers. BJV 787, a Van Hool Alizée bodied Scania K113CRB new in April 1990 registered G266 WVL, was seen travelling down Main Street in Cayton near Scarborough. My paternal grandmother came from Cayton and we were on a rare family visit to see other relations there - my first visit to the village for a good few years. I was disappointed that the road surface was in course of renewal which prevented some more photogenic and memorable shots. As a boy (late 1950s/early 1960s) we would visit my two Great Aunts who lived in the house partly visible at the rear of the coach. After the death of the first Great Aunt the other one moved across the street to the house on the left.

Wednesday 7 February 1996 - Applebys of Cornisholme, Lincolnshire 5447 FH, a Berkhof Excellence bodied Scania K113CRB, which was new in 1991 registered H82 FVL. Seen at Grantham Service Area on the A1 carrying the Grimsby Town football team. I don’t have the slightest interest in football but 27 years on I thought I’d try to find out where the team was going. A page on Wikipedia showed that they had an away game at Luton three days hence on Saturday 10 February (which they lost 3-2). I don’t know if that was the destination. The company had latterly been part of the ill-fated Bowens Group went into receivership during late 2012.

The coach fleet worked private hire and excursions. The company had latterly been part of the ill-fated Bowens Group went into receivership during late 2012. Duple Dominant bodied Leyland Leopard PSU5C/4R DAK 220V was seen here in Queen Street, Scarborough (at the junction with Newborough). It had been new to National Travel (East) in December 1979. The dome and building of Boyes Department Store stands in the background. One of my father’s cousins (Miss Ann Tasker) was a manager at the company in the 1950s/1960s and when we were on holiday in Scarborough we would pop in to the store to have a word. She was always very smartly dressed in a two-piece lady’s suit with a crisp blouse. Her work included driving to the Boyes stores in other towns such as York etc.
