Burwell & District at Burwell Museum

The village museum in Burwell, Cambridgeshire contains quite a number of artefacts recalling Burwell and District Motor Service, a bus company that linked the village with Cambridge and other neighbouring towns which was sold to Eastern Counties in 1979.

The museum site itself features a windmill with various outbuildings housing many aspects of local rural life in the area. Farm equipment, household appliances and wares, a telephone exchange, war time settings and some vehicles – the most significant to people like me is the preserved former B&D Plaxton Derwent bodied AEC Reliance 932 BCE new to the company in 1962.

There is a replica frontal area representing 9 DER, a Willowbrook bodied Daimler Fleetline, which contains a display case of B&D photographs, tickets and memorabilia of this respected local bus company. Another bus related feature is the restored wooden bus shelter that once stood in the High Street. There is also a model of Burwell railway station.

I recommend a visit. The museum is open on Thursdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays from Easter until the end of October (1100-1700 with last entry at 1600). Exceptional value for £4 (£2 for children).
