Market Hill/The Pavement forms the backcloth where the War Memorial can be seen. Just to the left is a statue of Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658) a townsman of St. Ives who was born in nearby Huntingdon. He served as Member of Parliament for Huntingdon from 1628 and for Cambridge from 1640. He is noted for ruling the British Isles as Lord Protector from 1653 until his death in 1658.
