Manchester Metrolink 1007 at G-Mex (Deansgate-Castlefield) Station - 14 Jul 1992 (167-7)

Tuesday 14 July 1992 – The Manchester Metrolink tramway system was officially opened by HM Queen Elizabeth II three days after this photograph was taken. Two trams are seen at what has become Deansgate-Castlefields tram station – I believe the station was named for the G-Mex Centre (Greater Manchester Exhibition Centre) at the time. Tram set 1007 was heading away from the station bound for Altrincham. This particular set was chosen to be the first tram to operate through Manchester city centre on 27 April 1992 chosen because it was the same number carried by Manchester Corporation Tramways last tram in 1949.

Built in Italy it was one of the first 26 Firema T-68 tram sets built in Italy. It entered service in April 1992, was withdrawn in February 2014 and is now preserved.
