DSCF4897 Richmond's 403 NMM in Letchworth - 22 Sep 2018

DSCF4897 Richmond's 403 NMM in Letchworth - 22 Sep 2018
Saturday 22 September 2018 (1444) – Richmond’s Coaches of Barley 403 NMM, a Van Hool TX27 Astromega new in June 2015 with that registration, seen at the Sollershott Roundabout on Broadway, Letchworth. I believe it may have been working a rail replacement service.

Note the sign on the roundabout itself which declares Sollershott’s claim to fame as the ‘UK’s First Roundabout Built circa 1909’.

Letchworth, full title Letchworth Garden City, the world’s first Garden City established in 1903 inspired town planning across the globe. Created as a solution to the squalor and poverty of urban life in Britain in the late 19th Century based on the ideas of Ebenezer Howard as published in his book of 1898 ‘Tomorrow: A Peaceful Path to Reform’.

Thanks for the info about 'Garden City'. I didn't know there was a specific origin for the name. The city I live in refers to its self as Toowoomba, the garden city. This week is its annual week-long Carnival of Flowers.

A few miles south of Letchworth is Welwyn Garden City. Both were built in the same era using the similar model. Whilst Letchworth was the first it didn't seem to make much use of the full three name title and people generally just refer to it as 'Letchworth.

Welwyn Garden City has utilised the full three word title from the beginning. As a consequence WGC is often mistakenly considered by many to have been the first garden city. WGC takes its name from the old and nearby village of Welwyn. To differentiate between the two the locals refer to WGC as 'Welwyn Garden' and refer to (the original) Welwyn as 'Welwyn'.
