Startrails round Polaris 16 12 2010
You know you have Polaris, the North Star in the centre, when everything else is forming circles round it on a star-trails merge. Polaris, (the north Star) is found in the northern hemisphere by looking north (Duh!) and it will be at angle to the horizon in the sky equivalent to the latitude you are looking from. So if you are at 57 degrees North, look high up in the sky - 57 degrees to the level/horizon (90 is directly above your head). Nearer the equator it will be just above the horizon, 5 degrees at 5N, for example, and the Australians will never see it from Australia.
