It all started a few years ago when we had a very cold winter with heavy snow . A number of pheasants came into the garden taking food put out for other wild birds, so I threw some grain over the fence into the field behind our house for them. Their successors, who live in the hedgerows around the field, have been coming back every since. The older ones (like this fella) are quite tame and are not even bothered by the presence of the dogs looking at them through the fence. With them being unafraid it helps me get to within a few feet and get the pictures. I'm happy to say they are not dependent on this food supply, in the warmer seasons they don't come to the fence as often as in cooler times.

thanks very much for the visit and generous comments Rosa. what you say is unfortunately true. I think perhaps that they associate vehicles with food from when they were young chicks and were used to the gamekeeper arriving in a vehicle to deliver their food - just a thought.
