Canada Tour Old Hazelton 1 xPiP

Two landmarks of the village of Hazelton. The Parish House and St Paul's Anglican Church in Old Hazelton. Hazelton is located at the confluence of the Skeena and Bulkley Rivers, at the foot of the Stekyoden in the Coast Mountains. The village was established in 1866 and developed into the center of the Northwest. Old trails became much-used routes for dogsleds, riders, and transport wagons to gold miners in the Cariboo and Yukon. Hazelton served as the starting point for overland trips and the paddle wheel steamers that went to Prince Rupert on the coast. The Gitxsan have been the guardians and protectors of the land and the important trading post for thousands of years. Today, the Gitxsan and non-Indigenous people live side by side as friends, family and neighbors. Our town is characterized by the beautiful, historic buildings and Gitxsan culture that transport the visitor to another time.

Canada Tour Hazelton Sternwheeler

The Hazelton, a sternwheeler that operated on the Skeena River from 1901 to 1912. The first owner was Robert Cunningham, who operated a freight company that served communities along the Skeena River. The Hazelton was named after one of the settlements it served, Hazelton, one of the oldest towns in northern British Columbia, founded in 1866 and the main staging area for the Omineca gold rush. The Hazelton was launched in 1901 , in her first season she made 13 trips to Hazelton and set a new speed record by covering the 180 miles upstream in only forty hours. The return trip downriver was even faster, the Hazelton routinely making it in ten hours. Today, the Hazelton is used as a home and museum
