Wikipedia sagt dazu: "Die Kosten für den Bau einer Schmalspurstrecke sind geringer als für eine Normalspurstrecke, denn wegen der engeren Bogenradien können sich schmalspurige Bahnen besser dem Gelände anpassen, wodurch teure Kunstbauten vermieden werden.

Schmalspurwagen stellen geringere Ansprüche an die Strukturfestigkeit ihrer Wagenkästen. Die Fahrzeuge können leichter gebaut werden, was insbesondere bei steigungsreichen Gebirgsbahnen von Vorteil ist. Geringe Wagenzugmassen sind bei Zahnradbahnen besonders wichtig, daher verkehren sie oft auf Schmalspur."
