1955 Land Rover & 1997 Land Rover Defender - TYD 645 & L90 MOD

1955 Land Rover & 1997 Land Rover Defender - TYD 645 & L90 MOD
Land Rover is reputedly the second oldest four-wheel-drive car brand in the world (after Jeep). The very first ones were produced back in 1948, so TYD 645, which can be seen in the background would have been one of the earliest ones produced.

Whereas, L90 MOD (love that registration) is a much more modern vehicle having been manufactured in 1997.

Cool photo Paul! Land Rover is high on my want list. The Defender is out of my price range though. There was a series 1 I should have bought a while back, but I was short on garage space and it needed some work.

Actually, The Four Wheel Drive Auto Company, more often known as Four Wheel Drive or just FWD, was founded in 1909 in Clintonville, Wisconsin, as the Badger Four-Wheel Drive Auto Company by Otto Zachow and William Besserdich. A British subsidiary was set up at Slough in 1921. In 1926, the British FWD, also known as the Quad, was produced with a larger 70 bhp engine.

I think WWII put the 4-wheel drive in to the minds of the public, and service men returning home from the war.

Short on garage space ... can sympathise with you there Norm as I'm sure many other car enthusiasts will too. As for the Four Wheel Drive Auto Company, that's a really interesting story and I must admit I'd never heard of them.

I hadn't either until a few years ago when I ran across one of their trucks for sale. They built a lot of trucks for logging and snow removal. I've had as many as four cars in my 2 1/2 car garage, but it sure doesn't leave much room to work. I hope to find another place sometime in the near future.
