Orchilla Guano: The Great Soil Enricher

Orchilla Guano: The Great Soil Enricher
"Orchilla Guano. The great soil enricher. Will grow big corn. Improves the quality and increases the quantity of the wheat; used with great success on berries, peach trees and all kinds of vegetables. Never fails on grass. R. A. Wooldridge & Co., importers, 64 Buchanan's Wharf, Baltimore, Md."

The stars and stripes of the U.S. flag seem to be an odd choice for the background of this nineteenth-century trade card that advertised imported bird, uh, manure.

For another card from the same company, see Orchilla Guano:

Great cards. The 38 star flag was official from 1877-1890, according to Wikipedia (although the 6-7-6-6-7-6 arrangement depicted wasn't the official one). The first trade card looks as though it could be from that period, I suppose. The other one is really nice as well.

Thanks, Andrew! That's a great idea for dating items with flags, and the 1877-1890 time frame matches the period when trade cards like this were especially popular. Thanks!
