Look Up and Not Down

Look Up and Not Down
"Merit Reward Merit. Look up and not down. Look forward and not backward. Look out and not in. And lend a hand. Presented to David Snyder, by R. C. McNamar, teacher. Colton, Zahm & Roberts, N.Y."

American author Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) published variations of his "Four Mottos" ("Look up and not down, look forward and not back, look out and not in, and lend a hand!") as early as 1870.

For another reward of merit printed by Colton, Zahm, & Roberts, see Those Who Know Everything in General Know Nothing in Particular.

"Rewards of Merit?"
Alan, I am continually amazed at the astounding range of your collection! How on earth do you keep track of them all when you're searching? With only a comparative fraction of categories, I am still challenged to remember them all and tend to have to focus on only several at a time.
I'm struck today by the quantity and breadth of your collection - the quality is always apparent!

Thanks so much, Deborah! I definitely have too many categories to keep track of, but I usually have fun trying. 8-)
