JEAN-LOUIS LASALLE -Baritone (.Lyon, December 10, 1845 or 14 February 1847 - September 07, 1909). Father of Robert Lassalle tenor. Student at Paris Concervatoire and later a pupil of Novelli.He made his first appearance on stage as St Bris in "Les Huguenot's" at Liege in 1868. During the next 4 years he sang at Lille , Toulouse , Brussels and the Hague . Debuted at the Opera on 09 June 1872 , as Nelusko "L'Africane". There he took part in many world premieres as Scindia in Massenet's "La Roi De Lahore" 1877 , Severe in Gounod's "Polyeucte" 1878 ,Ben Said in Gounod's "Le Tribute de Zamora ' 1880 ,Malatesta in Thomas's 'Francoise de Rimini" 1880 , and in 1183 the title role of Saint Saens "Henry VIII". He sang at Covent Garden 1879 , 1880 and 1881 and again between 1883-1891.In 1891 he made his Metropolitan Debut as Nelusko in Meyerbeer's "L'Africane". He sang Carmen (Escamillo) at the Opéra-Comique on December 11, 1890, for the erection of the monument to the memory of Bizet.

She appeared in that role at Udine on 24 July 1847, and later as Lucrezia in I due Foscari in the same theatre.Made her London (Her Majesty's) début for Lumley on 19 February 1848 as Elvira in Verdi's Ernani.

Karoline Bettelheim as Selica in L'Africaine by Giacomo Meyerbeer Karoline von Gompertz-Bettelheim (1845-1925); Hungarian mezzo-soprano/contralto Studied pianoforte with Karl Goldmark, and singing with Moritz Laufer. At the age of 14, she made her début as a pianist, and two years later appeared for the first time in opera at Vienna. She eventually obtained a permanent engagement at the Royal Opera in that city. In 1861 she made her debut as Priestess in Gluck’s “Iphigenie auf Tauris” at Vienna. She was one of the leading singers at the Vienna “Hofoper” but she had a very short career. In 1867 she married businessman Julius Ritter von Gompertz and retired from the stage. She continued singing at concerts in London, Frankfurt a.M., Leipzig, Aachen and Vienna. She was a famous interpretor of the “Lieder” of Johannes Brahms.

In 1838 he sang successfully in Venice and then in Bologna and in Genua. In 1848 he made guest appearances at the Teatro San Carlos at Lisbon. From 1855 until 1865 he was the "first buffo-singer" at the Théâtre-Italien in Paris. In 1863 at the Teatro Municipale Piacenza he sang at the première of Ponchielli's opera "Roderico Re dei Goti". From 1868/71 he made guest appearances at St.Petersburg and Warsaw and during the season 1875/76 at the Wiener Hofoper. In 1877 at La Scala Milan he performed the role of Bartolo in a legendary performance of Rossini 's "Il Barbiere di Siviglia", in which Giovanni Zucchini, Adelina Patti, Ernesto Nicolini and Leone Giraldoni enthralled the Scala audience.
