Borgarfjörður eystri is a fjord and village in the East of Iceland. Until WWII it was a very isolated fishing community, a road to connect the fjord with the rest of the country was only built by the late 1940s. Before that people had to walk over the mountains or go by sea. Borgarfjörður eystri is the second largest area of rhyolite in the country (extinct tertiary volanoes) and is of great natural beauty. www.borgarfjordureystri.is/home Borgarfjörður eystri liegt in den Ostflorden Islands. Bis zum 2. Weltkrieg war es eine sehr abgeschiedene Fischersiedlung. Eine Straßenverbindung wurde erst in den späten 40er-Jahren gebaut, zuvor kam man nur zu Fuß (über die Berge) oder mit dem Boot aus dem Fjord. Borgarfjörður eystri ist das zweitgrößte Rhyolitgebiet Islands (erloschene Vulkane aus dem Tertiär) und von großer landschaftlicher Schönheit mit den bunten Bergen.

Lindarbakki is one of the few privately owned and still inhabited turf houses in Iceland and a landmark in the village of Bakkagerði. Elísabet Sveinsdóttir, now an old lady, still lives there every summer. Lindarbakki ist eines der wenigen noch bewohnten, in Privatbesitz befindlichen Grassodenhäuser in Island und ein Wahrzeichen von Bakkagerði. Die Besitzerin Elísabet Sveinsdóttir ist inzwischen eine alte Dame, die aber immer noch jeden Sommer dort wohnt. HFF everybody!

Borgarfjörður eystri is the second largest area of rhyolitic rock in Iceland, consisting of 4 extinct volcanic centres. The Hvitserkur ignimbrite is thought to have filled the caldera of the Breiðuvík volcano before it was heavily eroded by glaciation. Hvitserkur is crossed by basalt dykes and topped by basalt (more detail in the 2nd note). Der Hvitserkur- Ignimbrit hat vermutlich einmal, vor der Erosion durch die Eiszeitgletscher, die Caldera des Breiðuvík-Vulkans gefüllt. Hvitserkur ist von Basalt-Dykes durchzogen und trägt eine Kappe aus Basalt (mehr Detail im 2. PiP)

Skælingur is a 832m high mountain between Húsavík and Loðmundarfjörður. A very steep jeep track crosses the ridge to the the left of it. Eine sehr steile Jeep.-Piste führt über den Sattel links vom Berg Die letzten EInwohner haben die Buchten und Fjorde der Gegend in den 70er-Jahren verlassen, aber der Wanderverein von Fljótsdalshérað betreibt inzwischen Hütten.

Húsavík was left by its last permanent inhabitants in 1972. Today it consists of 2 houses and a barn. The cemetery has two crosses left, the other graves have been lost to the sea due to erosion. The tiny church is maintained in pristine condition. Húsavík wurde 1972 von den letzten ständigen Bewohnern verlassen. 2 Häuser sind noch übrig, außerdem eine Scheune und 2 Grabkreuze auf dem Friedhof. Der Rest der Gräber ist durch Erosion ins Meer gerutscht. Die winzige Kirche wird in gepflegtem Zustand erhalten. The small church is one of few buildings left at Húsavík in the East fjords of Iceland. The last permanent inhabitants left the place in 1972 but the church is well maintained and open to the public (see note for inside shot). Die kleine Kirche ist eines der wenigen erhaltenen Gebäude in Húsavík in den isländischen Ostfjorden. Staðarfjall is one of the colourful rhyolithic mountains that are part of the Breiðuvik volcanic complex, seen here from the Fjarðará valley in Borgarfjörður eystri. In the note a farm making use of the Nissen huts left by the Allies after WWII. Staðarfjall ist einer der bunten Rhyolitberge in Borgarfjörður eystri, die Teil des Breiðuvik-Vulkans sind. Dyrfjöll is an 1137m high extinct tertiary volcano between Héraðsflói and Borgarfjörður eystri. It's easily recognizable by its door (dyr), a huge gap in the mountain created by ice age glaciers. Rjúkandi is a 93m high waterfall in Jökuldalur. Its waters flow into Jökulsá á Brú river (also called Jökulsá á Dal or Jökla).

Geirsstaðakirkja is the replica of an old turf church from early Christian times around 1000 A.D. It lies in an area between the rivers Lagarfljót and Jökulsá á Brú called Hróarstunga after an early settler. In 1997 a viking farm with a small church was excavated 2 km from where the replica now stands. Interiour in the note. Geirsstaðakirkja ist der Nachbau einer Torfkirche aus der Frühzeit der Christianisierung Islands um 1000 n.Chr. Im Gebiet Hróarstunga (benannt nach einem frühen Siedler), das zwischen den Flüssen Lagarfljót und Jökulsá á Brú liegt, grub man 1997 einen Wikingerhof aus, der auch eine kleine Kirche hatte. Der Nachbau liegt ca. 2km vom Grabungsort entfernt. Innenansicht im PiP.

The pass over Hellisheiði Eystri (ca. 660m) connects Héraðsflói with Vopnafjörður. It's gravel with many curves both sides of the pass but rerouting has reduced the gradient from the former 24% to only 14%. In winter the road is often closed. Der Pass über Hellisheiði Eystri (ca. 660m) verbindet Héraðsflói mit Vopnafjörður. Es ist eine Schotterstrasse mit vielen, früher gefürchteten Kurven, die aber inzwischen von 24% auf 14% Steigung/ Gefälle entschärft woden ist. Im Winter ist die Strasse oft nicht passierbar.

Found on Hellisheiði eystri, Iceland's highest mountain (road) pass. The intense neon green can only be seen at higher elevations alongside streams. It's Pohlia wahlenbergii var. glacialis, an arctic moss species. Auf Hellisheiði eystri, Islands höchstem Pass, über den eine Strasse führt. Das intensive Neongrün des Mooses findet man nur in höheren Lagen entlang von Wasserläufen. Es handelt sich um Pohlia wahlenbergii var. glacialis, ein unbenetzbates arktisches Quellflurmoos (Wassertropfen bleiben wie Perlen oben auf dem Moos stehen).

Bustarfell is a turf farm in East Iceland which has belonged to the same family since the 16th century. Methúsalem Methúsalemsson (sic!) sold the houses to the Icelandic National Museum in 1944, but the family continued living in it for many more years. The younger generation now live in a newly built farm nearby and the old house is a museum (see notes). www.east.is/en/what-to-see-and-do/services/bustarfell-museum Bustarfell ist ein Torfhof in Ostisland, der seit dem 16. Jahrhundert von der selben Familie bewirtschaftet wird. 1944 verkaufte Methúsalem Methúsalemsson (sic!) das Haus an das Isländische Nationalmuseum, die Familie blieb aber noch lange Zeit darin wohnen. Die Jungen haben sich nebenan einen neuen Hof gebaut und der alte Hof ist heute ein Museum (s. PiPs)

WWII Nissen hut used as storage at the old harbour of Bakkafjörður, a small fishing village with some 70 inhabitants. A new sheltered harbour was built further inland and the old harbour fell into disrepair. Eine zum Lagerraum umfunktionierte Nissenhütte aus dem 2. Weltkrieg am alten Hafen von Bakkafjörður, einem kleinen Fischerdorf mit ca. 70 Einwohnern. Seit ein neuer geschützter Hafen weiter innen am Fjord in Betrieb genommen wurde, verfiällt der alte Hafen.
