Fjarðarheiði

The pass over Fjarðarheiði connects the ferry port of Seyðisfjörður with Egilsstaðir on the Ring Road. As the pass (620m) is often impassable in winter( and even spring) there are plans to build a tunnel. The panorama was taken from the viewpoint halfway up the pass and shows Seyðisfjörður (650 inhabitants) in the distance- see notes.

Der Pass über Fjarðarheiði verbindet den Fährhafen Seyðisfjörður mit Egilsstaðir an der Ringstrasse. Weil die Strasse (Passhöhe 620m) im WInter und selbst im Frühling öfter unpassierbar ist, ist ein Tunnel geplant. Das Panorama ist vom Aussichtspunkt in halber Höhe aufgenommen, Seyðisfjörður ist in der Ferne zu sehen (s. PiPs).

Danke vielmals, Udo! Unten am Ende des Fjords ist es eng, bei den steilen Bergflanken ist die Lawinengefahr hoch. Draußen weitet sich der Fjord wieder.

Großen Dank, Berny! Also der Campingplatz war brechend voll, weil am Tag drauf die Norröna kam. Ansonsten waren wir nur abseits der Ringstrasse in weitgehend touristenfreien Gegenden unterwegs. Ich nehme an, im Süden/ Golden Circle war es wie üblich voll mit Touris.

Dank dir,Dany! Die Bäume brauchen in dem Klima Jahrhunderte, um einen Meter hoch zu werden und die Wikinger haben damals alles in Rekordzeit abgeholzt;-) Was in Island Bäume sind, würden wir als Sträucher bezeichnen, Zwergbirken sehen sogar nur aus wie Bodendecker;-)

Thanks very much, Amelia! It is a twisty road, going from sealevel to 620m in a few kilometers! But at least it's not gravel any longer, so the tourists coming from the ferry don't get too much of a shock;-)
