It looks like an ichneumon fly, a type of wasp and that tail is its ovipositor. that's from memory so could be wrong. I'd be pleased to be corrected if so!

Thanks Andy - your ID is correct. Looked through my Collins guide and there are several of these. Not quite sure which it is but that does not matter - it is a new find for me.
