This is half way up the huge trunk of an old Beech tree. Do not have an ID ?- not even sure it is fungal. Ideas anyone? It is approx the size of an apple.

I think this is known as King Alfred's Cake Fungi, because it resembles burnt cake. It's probably got a more technical name though ;-)

Thanks for the ID Tim. Looked up the name in one of my fungi books and found it. Not a good pic in the book which is probably why I missed it first time round.
