Over and out
Fermeture définitive. The rural exodus leaves marks
L'Isle-de-Noé - Alimentation
The rural exodus leaves its mark. With a population of less than 500, supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl in the larger communities, there is no future for the businesses in villages like L'Isle-de-Noé. When this facade, with it´s wonderful golden lettering was created, there was still much hope
Gray - Orchids
Just opposite the "Basilique Notre-Dame de Gray", where since the 17th century a miraculous statue of "Our Lady" is venerated, somebody loves orchids and has arranged the flowerpots in a former shop window. There was even a surveillance camera once..
Logroño - LUCLA
Once upon a time hunting weapons were offered here. Now somebody has promised "Eternal Love" to Lucla in the shop window. "Make Love, not War" waves the red-haired doll.
Argenton-Château
Since 2006 Argenton-Château and two other villages form the new commune Argenton-les-Vallées. The development did not help the local business.

Sully-sur-Loire - Armurerie
Tulette - Boulangerie
I have seen quite a lot of these "a vendre" signs. Behind every single given up shop is a tragedy. There may be many reasons. Rural exodus is a big problem for small villages. German discounters Lidl and Aldi have opened about 2500 supermarkets in France since 1988.
Mosnac - Boulangerie
Some decades ago every single village in France had a "Boulangerie". Life without fresh bread produced locally twice a day was just not thinkable. Meanwhile many of them closed down forever.
Blaye - Boulangerie
A forgotten baker shop in Blaye. Behind every single given-up shop is a tragedy. Walking through the countryside in France, I came across lots of these. For a while, I pondered, whether I should buy these old signs - to save them.
Montmarault - Cremerie
The rural exodus, that started in the hamlets and villages, has reached the small towns. With a population of about 1500, more populous towns with supermarkets like Aldi and Lidl only 20-30 kms around, there is no future for small businesses like these shops in Montmarault. The main road is lined by empty shops.
Deux-Chaises - L`Alimentation
Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule - Garage Vignau
Saint-Pourçain-sur-Sioule is a nice little town, with a well known wine and an interesting church - and the former Garage Vignau. As you can seen, this was in deed a "MODERN´GARAGE".
It is not modern any longer - and soon the garage will be gone.
Via Turonensis - Garage
Carcassonne - RADIOLA
I do clearly remember the rise of these electronic shops - now the very most of them history. While dust has settled on tiny Radiola, giant Motorola is still fighting, but large parts by now are already swallowed by Google.
Samer - Charcuterie
The small town of Samer developed around the Abbaye Saint-Wulmer (founded in 668) and so the Flemish name for the town is still Sint-Wulmaars. The abbey meanwhile is in ruins. The nice mosaic of the Charcuterie Cassez-Jolly still exists, though the shop is closed down.
Samer - Boucherie

was once is now the office of a nurse.

Reims - Livres Anciens
Since many antiquarian bookshops are leaving their (expensive) shops and moving into the (cheap) internet, their nice shops are to rent. I have spent hours and hours in these shops..
