The church is known as the burial ground for the Doges of Venice. Next to the church is the façade of the "Scuola Grande di San Marco", once home to one of the major sodalities of Venice. In 1819, when Venice was part of the Austrian-held Kingdom of Lombardy-Venetia, the building became a military hospital. The military moved out - but this is still a hospital. This is the main entrance of the "Ospedale SS. Giovanni e Paolo".
