Campobasso - San Leonardo

Campobasso - San Leonardo
Campobasso was probably established before the 8th century as a fortified camp of Lombards at the foot of the present castle hill. After the Normans conquered southern Italy in the 11th century, Campobasso lost its importance as a defensive stronghold but became a significant trading and administration center.

San Leonardo was built in the early 14th century in the Romanesque/Gothic style halfway down the castle hill. In 1338 it was consecrated and administered by the Dominicans. After the baptistery of San Giorgio (prev. photos) was moved there and it became the main church of the medieval town. The earthquake of1456 damaged the church, which then was enlarged inside.

Marco F. Delminho, Paolo Tanino have particularly liked this photo
