Campobasso - San Giorgio

Campobasso - San Giorgio
Campobasso was probably established before the 8th century as a fortified camp of Lombards at the foot of the present castle hill. After the Normans conquered southern Italy in the 11th century, Campobasso lost its importance as a defensive stronghold but became a significant trading and administration center.

San Giorgio probably dates from the 10th century and it is believed that it was built where once stood a pagan temple.
The tympanum over the portal. The Lamb of God is in the center. Snakes, flowers, and fruits are entangled on the ornament around.
