Lage - Marktkirche St. Johann

Lage - Marktkirche St. Johann
Lage is a city about 8kms apart from larger Detmold the capital of the Principality of Lippe from 1468 until 1918 and then capital of the Free State of Lippe until 1947 when Lippe was incorporated into the new German state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Actually, Lage is much older than Detmold. Already around 900 a parish church "St. Johann" existed. In 1274, Lage is mentioned in a document for the life annuity of the local clergy by the sentence "Jordanus plebanis in Lagis".

The origins of Marktkirche go back to the first church on this spot, which was one of the important baptismal churches in the region. The Romanesque single-nave church git replaced by the Gothic church of today in the 15th century.

Unfortunately, the church was locked.
