Cologne - Bottmühle

Cologne - Bottmühle
Cologne is the fourth-largest city in Germany - and one of the oldest. A Germanic tribe, the Ubii, had a settlement here, this was named by the Romans "Oppidum Ubiorum". In 50 AD, the Romans founded "Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium", the city then became the provincial capital of "Germania Inferior".

Peter von Gleuel, who had qualified for his work in Holland, erected a wooden windmill for processing grain here in 1588. This mill got replaced in 1678 with a windmill from stone, erected by local stonemason Arnold von Gülich.

The four-story, round tower is located on an elevated surface (Bott) and is surrounded by an area sloping steeply to street level. It got sold in the early 19th century and repurchased by the City of Cologne in the 1920. Since 1970 "Die Falken", a socialist youth group, use the Bottmühle.
