Löffingen - Winterschnee

Löffingen - Winterschnee
This massive, Neo-Romanesque pilgrimage church named "Winterschnee" ("Winter snow) is located just outside the small town of Löffingen.

In winter 1740 a hiker got into a snowstorm on the hilltop, which was called "Itirsne" and later "Witarsne". In his need, he vowed to have a cross erected where he would receive salvation. At the place of the pilgrimage church, he heard a bell from Löffingen and woodcutters passing by took him into town. The man kept his vow.

Over the years, more and more pilgrims came to the cross. In 1874 a wooden chapel was built for the cross, that was widely believed miracle-working.

As more and more pilgrims arrived the current church was erected between 1894 and 1897

The church had always been open for pilgrims. In September 2019 unknown criminals stole six paintings out of the open church. Shame on them.

You are right. The Neo-Romanesque style got an Art-Deco touch.
